Not the usual 1st day of school … Usual 2.0!

First day!

Today was the first day of school for us.  The kids were excited yet nervous, like usual.  Things were organized and ready to go, like usual. I waved to the kids as the bus pulled away, like usual.

School day mornings are such a family affair in our house. We have the routine down. I wake the kids, make sure they get dressed, help them comb their hair. Chris gets them breakfast and makes the beds. He feeds the cat, I pack lunches. We have a few good laughs.  We both wave as the bus pulls away. Then off to work we go.

But today was nothing like usual. It was like usual 2.0 … somewhat familiar yet quite different.  Things got done. The girls looked cute. Lunches were packed. We facetimed a super-tired Chris (that 3 hour time difference is killer), so we all got to chat.  We all felt it, though. It was different. And, of course, usual 2.0 doesn’t include a Susan job feature.  We have to wait for the release of usual 2.5 for that.

A few photos from today and from school days of yesteryear, just for fun. 🙂

Allison and Lindsay on the first day of school

Today! Lindsay and Allison’s first day of 2nd grade and 4th grade.

A photo from my first day of school, 1st grade. My brother is pictured with me.

My 7th birthday party, the summer before 2nd grade. I am in the front row, on the right.

Usual 1.0 was a great version. I really liked it and it worked quite well.  I miss it. But one can’t live in the past. It is what it is. Usual 2.0 has its benefits. We’re doing everything we can to bridge the distance. And heck … who knows what improvements usual.2.5 and 3.0 might bring?

Did you have a first day of school today?  How was it?  Usual or not-so-usual?  I’d love to hear from you!

  1. SKO’s pigtails! That brings back memories of those school bus rides with your big bro 🙂
Lindsay’s really rockin’ that pink and purple — even her backpack matched! Girl after her Mommy’s heart 🙂 Must I remind you of the purple sweater with orange polka dots and matching socks?

    • You’ll never let me live that down, will you? 😉 That outfit was so 80s! The backpack matching was coincidental but I love those backpacks. Love Land’s End backpacks! Thanks for commenting. Love it!

  2. The girl’s look adorable! Love the pic of you and Steven! Unbelievable that your 1st day was today! Today was our 10th day of school, only 170 days til summer!

    • It *IS* funny how different school start days can be, isn’t it, Gail? We have always started after Labor Day here. We were on vacation when some districts were starting back at school ;-). The summer went by so fast … Thanks for commenting :-). I love hearing from you!

      • I am enjoying watching how well you and your family are doing handling this commuting situation. You are doing a great job of keeping a “normal” routine for your kids! It has got to be awfully hard! I really commend you.
